Mike, there are times when policy is being delivered when you have to stay on script, I know, "been there done it". If yoi have ever been with a Ministers minder, they check the speech at the top it has "check against delivery". I am a free bird, I know what I want to say and deliver it in my own words, not something prepared.i hope it sounds authentic.
Paul, I completely understand that and it’s a fair point well made. You’ve got immense experience in this area and, as the father of the council chamber in Birmingham, that experience commands real respect.
There’s certainly a time for staying on script, particularly when delivering policy or handling the official side of business. You’ve mastered that balance over the years knowing when to stick to the brief and when to speak freely. I think a parties recognise that.
I think where we probably meet is on authenticity. Whether it’s written or spoken, it’s the delivery that gives words their weight. Many of the Cllrs however miserably fail the test as all they know is reading out loud from officers scripts...
